What type of gears does my gearbox use?

There are various options throughout the range, and what gear position uses a standard ratio or not can sometimes be difficult to know. It can make a difference if you have an integral layshaft or a slide on arrangement. A common question is do I need MK5 or MK8 gears in my MK8/MK9 gearbox. This is determined by the diameter of the layshaft. Please use our information table to help you decide what you require

What type of clutch rings (dog rings) does my gearbox use?

There are a few series of gearbox that use clutch rings from a different family of parts to what the gearbox name may suggest. Please use our information table to help you decide which type you need

My gearbox was offered with both FT and DG clutch rings over the years, how do I know which one to use?

Early DG, FG and FT gearboxes came with FT clutch rings, and later versions of the gearbox came with DG. It is important to replace your worn out clutch rings with the correct type as the sizes are differnt to work with different hubs. Please use our drawing to identify which type you need

What crown wheel and pinion do I need for my gearbox?

Depending on 4 speed or 5 speed can make a difference and as some gearboxes developed over the years they were still using the crown wheel and pinion of previous designs. Please use our information table to help identify which type you need

*On the HD4 and HD5 the crown wheel and pinion is no longer produced, it is replaced by the FT type. The holes in the differential housing need enlarging to accept the crownwheel bolts needed for FT. This is the only modification required
